The Department of History and Philology of the Far East
The Department of History and Philology of the Far East of the IOCS was created in 2004. The faculty members of the Department specialize in literature, history, culture and languages of such countries of the Far Eastern region as China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos.
Head of the Department: Dr. Georgi S. Starostin
Majors of the Department:
|Chinese Philology||Vientamese Philology||History and Philology of Thailand and Laos
|Korean Philology||Japanese Philology|
The activity of the Department is aimed primarily at training specialists in traditional culture of one of the countries of the Far East region. After graduating, such specialists can be engaged in research, translation, interpreting or teaching activity. In the teaching process, special attention is paid to reading, translation and analysis of ancient and medieval texts as well as to the theoretical courses. The students are stimulated to develop the scholarly way of thinking as well as skills of critical analysis of sources and concepts.
The main goal of the department is not only to carry on the traditions of national Oriental studies — which formerly occupied an important position in the international academic arena — but also to bring them to a new, modern level.
